Removable Retainers

Removable retainers are the most common retainer type supplied after orthodontic treatment. They are one retention option alongside permanent retainers or a combination of removable and permanent retention.

The available retention research records discomfort among patient experiences, but gives no specific pain rate for removable retainers. A retainer should sit over the teeth without being forced or altered at home.

Retainers can break, be lost or degrade over time. Longer retention may also affect supporting gum and tooth tissues, so a damaged appliance is different from one that still fits and functions normally.

A removable retainer has no single fixed lifetime. Breakage, loss and material degradation can lead to replacement, while ongoing retention is used to maintain tooth alignment.

Retention research compares Hawley, Essix and bonded retainers by their effect on how teeth meet after orthodontic treatment. The appliance is used during the retention phase rather than to move teeth actively.

Brush a removable retainer with toothpaste after taking it out and before putting it back. Very hot water and harsh chemicals can damage or warp the material.

Fixed bonded retainers are the main alternative. In the evidence review, Hawley retainers allowed better overall settling, bonded retainers settled the back teeth faster, and Essix retainers showed reduced occlusal contact during retention.

The fit and appearance differ between designs: Hawley retainers have visible wire, while Essix retainers resemble clear aligners. Both designs can be removed for cleaning and then put back in place.

Replacement can become part of the cost of retention because both fixed and removable retainers are prone to breakage, loss and degradation. A replacement appliance may be needed after one of these events.
