Tooth Extraction

Extraction may be needed for dental trauma, damage, or decay when other treatment is not enough to save the natural tooth.

Local anaesthesia numbs the affected tooth and surrounding gum tissue during removal. Sedation can also be used for anxiety or comfort.

Possible complications include delayed healing, dry socket, infection, maxillary sinus damage, and nerve injury. They are risks of a surgical procedure.

Most people feel back to normal in a few days and resume routine activities within 48 to 72 hours. Jawbone healing usually takes several weeks.

The tooth and gum are numbed, then the tooth is loosened and removed. Gauze is placed over the site, and a surgical extraction can involve an incision or dividing the tooth.

Small amounts of blood can ooze during the first night. Bruising, discomfort, and swelling are common, and day three is usually the most painful day.

Dentists usually consider extraction after other treatment is insufficient to save the natural tooth. Complex extractions are usually referred to specialists.

Apply an ice pack to the face for 20 minutes, then leave it off for 20 minutes, to reduce swelling. Swelling and bruising should settle after a few days.
