Fluorescence Cavity Detection

A fluorescence-based method is used during dental assessment to look for patterns associated with caries. The dentist considers the finding with other examination information before deciding what it means for care.

Detection methods do not remove the need for interpretation. Systematic reviews describe variation between methods and study conditions, so a fluorescence finding should be discussed as part of the complete dental assessment.

Several methods have been studied for detecting caries lesions, including non-cavitated lesions. The dentist chooses the approach that fits the tooth, the examination, and the question being assessed.

A fluorescence finding is information for the dentist to interpret. It does not by itself explain the depth, activity, or treatment need of a lesion; those decisions require the wider assessment.

Fluorescence-based detection is studied as a method for examining caries lesions. Ask the dental team what method is being used, what it can show, and how the result will be interpreted.
