Question and answer

Really white teeth

Very white teeth may reflect whitening, veneers, or natural variation; the right option depends on enamel, stains, restorations, and gum health.

The short answer

Very white teeth may reflect whitening, veneers, or natural variation; the right option depends on enamel, stains, restorations, and gum health. Whitening changes tooth color, while veneers cover the front surface and do not change the shade of existing restorations.

Why are healthy natural teeth not paper white?

Natural teeth contain translucent enamel over yellow-brown dentin, so healthy teeth are not uniformly paper white. Color also varies with age, enamel thickness, food stains, tobacco exposure, fluorosis, trauma, and medicines taken while teeth formed.

How can you reduce stains and improve tooth colour?

Have plaque and calculus removed, brush with fluoride toothpaste, and reduce repeated exposure to staining drinks. A dentist can distinguish removable stain from intrinsic discoloration and plan whitening, bonding, or ceramic treatment accordingly.

When can a tooth colour change need dental care?

Book an examination if one tooth darkens, develops a gray or pink color, or becomes painful, because trauma or pulpal disease can change its internal color. Seek care before cosmetic treatment when there is decay, gum inflammation, exposed root dentin, or cracked enamel.

What is causing your tooth colour and what change is realistic?

Ask whether your color is caused by surface stain, dentin, enamel development, or a restoration, and what shade change is realistic for that cause. Ask how the planned result will match fillings and crowns and how sensitivity will be controlled.

Frequently asked questions

Are yellowish teeth always unhealthy?

No. Dentin naturally has a warmer color, although yellowing can also result from stain, enamel loss, or disease.

Can every stain be whitened?

No. Whitening is less useful for some developmental defects, deep trauma-related color, and existing dental restorations.
