A new retainer can feel tight, but sharp pain, a sore spot, swelling, or a retainer that does not seat needs an orthodontic check.

A retainer holds teeth after clear-aligner treatment while the surrounding bone and periodontal tissues adapt. Pressure usually means the retainer is contacting teeth, but rubbing can injure the gum or cheek.

Check the appliance for cracks, rough edges, trapped debris, and distortion, and follow the prescribed wearing schedule. Do not trim it or force it over a tooth; an orthodontist can adjust or remake it after checking tooth position.

Arrange care if pain persists, worsens, prevents wearing the retainer, or comes with a cut, ulcer, bleeding, swelling, or a tooth that feels loose. Contact the orthodontic team promptly if the retainer no longer fits fully.

Ask whether the fit matches your current tooth positions and whether an edge is traumatizing soft tissue. Ask if the appliance needs adjustment, replacement, or a revised retention plan.
