Invisalign is a discreet option for people who want orthodontic tooth movement without traditional metal braces. Crooked or crowded teeth can make cleaning harder and contribute to decay or gum disease.

Mild discomfort is common for the first few days, and the mouth usually has an adjustment period of about a week. The temporary discomfort can be eased by rinsing with warm salt water.

The trays are removable for eating, drinking, brushing and flossing, which makes daily cleaning straightforward. They must be worn for the prescribed time so that the gentle pressure can move teeth as planned.

Each aligner is typically worn for one week and at least 22 hours a day. The total number of trays and treatment time depend on the orthodontic movements required.

A series of custom-made trays is worn in sequence. Each tray moves teeth a fraction of a millimetre before the next aligner takes over.

The trays are not usually made on site, so delivery from the manufacturer can take 4 to 6 weeks. Initial scans, attachments and learning the wear routine are part of getting started.

Traditional metal braces are the main fixed alternative. Clear aligners provide a more discreet route for people who prefer a removable appliance.

Remove the trays before eating or drinking, then remove them again to brush and floss. Wearing them for at least 22 hours a day leaves only a short daily window without the aligners.

Orthodontic plans that include cover usually cover traditional braces and clear aligners equally, although coverage differs between providers. Treatment cost also reflects the number of aligners and the movements required.
