Immediate Dentures

Immediate dentures are used when teeth need to be removed and a replacement is needed quickly. They can also be used when teeth are being added to an existing set, with fitting possible within a few days.

The fitting follows tooth removal, so early soreness and bleeding precautions matter. Avoid rinsing your mouth and hot drinks for the first six hours because either can cause bleeding; pain relief should follow the instructions given for you.

Warning signs include clicking while speaking, slipping, pain, damage, very red or bleeding gums, and bad breath. These can accompany poor fit, gum disease, fungal infection, or tooth decay and need attention.

Immediate dentures are not a permanent first set: the mouth can change shape as it heals after extraction, so adjustment or replacement may be needed within a year. Another set is made and fitted in the same way.

The mouth is measured first, using putty to make a mould or a scan instead. Dentures normally take a few weeks to make, followed by a separate fitting appointment. Immediate dentures can usually be made within a few days.

After fitting, clean the removable dentures regularly and look after them carefully. Immediate dentures may be worn for 8 to 12 months, while healing changes the mouth and a replacement set becomes necessary.

Other ways to replace missing teeth include bridges, which are fixed to other teeth, and dental implants, which are fixed to the jawbone and can support crowns or some dentures. A standard denture remains removable.

Payment includes the denture-making and fitting stages, with NHS dental charges applying in the cited care setting. In Dubai, the written plan should separate the appliance, fitting, later adjustments, and any replacement work.
