Clear aligners can be useful for people who want a discreet removable alternative to traditional metal braces. They are custom-formed to fit the mouth and apply pressure in a planned sequence.

Mild discomfort commonly occurs during the first few days, while the mouth adapts to a new tray. That adjustment period is usually about a week.

A systematic review found aligners associated with a lower risk of external apical root resorption than fixed appliances, though the techniques have different indications, treatment duration and mechanisms. Aligners must also be removed for meals and oral hygiene.

Each tray is typically worn for one week, and each moves teeth a fraction of a millimetre. The number of aligners and the active treatment time follow the movements needed to correct the misalignment.

A series of thin, plastic-like trays is made to fit the mouth. Wearing one aligner after another applies the controlled pressure needed for the planned tooth movements.

Clear aligners are usually made away from the practice, and delivery from the manufacturer can take 4 to 6 weeks. Scans, possible attachments and learning the care routine happen before regular tray changes begin.

Traditional fixed braces are an alternative where a removable clear tray is not wanted. Fixed braces stay on the teeth, whereas aligners come out for food, drink, brushing and flossing.

The daily routine is specific: wear each tray at least 22 hours, remove it to eat or drink, then take it out again for brushing and flossing. Skipping this routine reduces the time that teeth receive the planned pressure.

Orthodontic coverage that includes clear aligners often treats them the same as traditional braces, but accepted cover varies by provider. Costs also vary with the number of aligners and the tooth movements involved.
