Porcelain Veneers

A porcelain veneer is a thin shell custom-made to fit the front surface of a tooth. It is strong, long-lasting and natural-looking, but placement requires removing a small amount of enamel.

Porcelain veneers change the front appearance of a tooth. Decay and gum disease need treatment before placement because a veneer over unhealthy teeth can worsen existing dental problems; clenching, grinding or a deep overbite can also rule them out.

Placement starts by removing a small amount of enamel from the front and sides of the tooth so the porcelain can be bonded. Removing enamel makes the treatment irreversible.

Untreated decay or gum disease can worsen if a veneer is placed over it. Veneer services from an unlicensed individual may carry potential infection and nerve-damage risks.

Porcelain veneers are strong and long-lasting, yet they can still chip, crack, wear down or loosen. A loose or damaged shell may need re-bonding, repair or replacement.

After shade selection and tooth preparation, an impression or three-dimensional scan is sent to a laboratory to make the shell. The veneer is checked for fit and shape, adjusted if needed, then bonded to the cleaned tooth.

A temporary veneer may cover the prepared tooth while the laboratory makes the final shell. The final fitting includes shape and fit adjustments before cleaning and bonding.

Composite is the main alternative. It may require less enamel removal and is easier to repair if damaged, but it is less stain- and wear-resistant than porcelain; porcelain also tends to cost more.

The selected shade is matched to natural teeth, and the laboratory makes the porcelain shell for the tooth's size, shape and fit. A temporary can help while that final shell is being made.

Porcelain veneers are cosmetic dentistry, so insurance may not cover them unless they are considered medically necessary.
