They are part of cosmetic veneer treatment. Veneers are porcelain or resin covers placed on tooth fronts, and they can change the appearance of teeth that are discoloured or misshapen.

This option may be considered for a chipped tooth, a gap, wear, discolouration, or a tooth whose shape is a concern. Gum disease and insufficient enamel for support can make a different cosmetic procedure more suitable.

The placement sequence can include removing a small amount of enamel, taking an impression or 3D scan, checking the fit, making adjustments, cleaning the tooth, and bonding the veneer. Enamel removal makes veneer treatment irreversible.

Decay and gum disease need treatment before a veneer is placed because covering unhealthy teeth may worsen the existing problem. Placement by an unlicensed person can bring infection and nerve-damage risks.

A veneer can chip, crack, wear down, or loosen over time. When that happens, it may need to be re-bonded, repaired, or replaced.

The shade is selected to match natural teeth. After preparation, a laboratory can make a custom veneer from an impression or 3D model; at the fitting, the shape and fit are checked before bonding.

A temporary veneer may be worn while the custom veneer is being made. The permanent veneer is checked for shape and fit, adjusted if needed, then bonded to the tooth.

Porcelain and composite are the two main veneer types. Porcelain is strong, long-lasting, and resistant to staining and wear; composite is easier to repair but is less stain- and wear-resistant.

Expect a colour match, tooth preparation where needed, and a fit check before bonding. A temporary veneer can be used while the laboratory makes the custom veneer.

Veneers are cosmetic dentistry, so insurance may not cover them unless they are considered medically necessary. Porcelain veneers tend to cost more than composite veneers.
