Digital Denture Workflow

Digital complete dentures can save clinical time, but retention loss, remakes, and extra follow-up visits can still occur.

[1]

The short answer

Digital denture workflows use milling or 3D printing and can save clinical time compared with conventional workflows.

What is a digital denture workflow?

The reviewed studies included definitive complete dentures, denture bases, trial dentures, and digital images. Twenty-one studies used milling and 17 used 3D printing for denture fabrication.

What the review found about time and follow-up
MeasureFinding
Clinical timeDigital complete dentures saved 205 to 233 minutes compared with conventional workflows[1]
Follow-upAt least one extra visit and one to four unscheduled follow-up visits were needed[1]

Which records and steps can be used?

Digital denture studies used border-moulded impressions, facebow records, gothic arch tracing, and trial dentures. A border-moulded impression is preferred for retention, and a trial denture is recommended to optimise the definitive denture.

[1]

What can still go wrong?

Up to 37.5% of participants reported loss of retention and up to 31.3% required a denture remake. These outcomes occurred despite the shorter clinical time reported for digital workflows.

[1]

How does it compare with conventional dentures?

Patient satisfaction and oral health-related quality of life were similar between conventional, milled, and 3D-printed complete dentures. The maximum occlusal force was also similar across fabrication procedures.

[1][2]

What does the workflow change for denture wearers?

The workflow may shorten clinical time, but it does not remove the need for adjustments. Retention and comfort can still lead to extra visits or an unplanned follow-up.

[1]

What should be understood about denture-base strength?

The evidence on digital complete denture complications is still developing. In laboratory evidence, milled digital denture bases showed higher flexural strength than 3D-printed bases after lower-quality studies were excluded.

Frequently asked questions

Can a digital denture still need a remake?

Yes. Up to 31.3% of participants in the reviewed studies required a denture remake, and loss of retention was also reported.
