Dental Air Polishing Device

Air-polishing tools were developed as an alternative to hand and ultrasonic scalers for dental biofilm removal. Subgingival air polishing is studied as an adjunct to periodontal treatment, using different powders and delivery approaches.

For supportive periodontal therapy, repeated subgingival air polishing produced similar clinical outcomes to conventional hand or power-driven treatment and better patient comfort. Implant-maintenance evidence for improved outcomes remains limited.

Hand instruments and power-driven instruments are the main comparison methods in maintenance studies. Air polishing may be used subgingivally as an adjunct, rather than as a replacement for every periodontal procedure.

Subgingival biofilm control is linked with stable periodontal treatment outcomes. The review literature also associates subgingival air polishing with patient comfort and less damage to periodontal structures.

The main safety and evidence limits concern the treatment setting and powder. Clinical outcomes were similar in periodontal maintenance, while evidence of better implant-maintenance outcomes was limited.
