Does wisdom teeth removal hurt with local anesthesia

Local anesthetic temporarily blocks nerve conduction around the tooth and surrounding tissues while you remain awake. The difficulty of removal depends on eruption, root shape, bone coverage, tooth angle, and its relationship to nearby nerves or the maxillary sinus.

The dentist numbs the area, tests it before starting, lifts the gum if needed, removes bone or divides the tooth when indicated, cleans the socket, and places sutures when required. Afterward, protect the clot, follow the written instructions, use approved pain relief, and avoid disturbing the wound.

Tell the dental team immediately if sharp pain occurs during the procedure. After removal, seek prompt care for uncontrolled bleeding, increasing swelling, fever, worsening pain after initial improvement, difficulty swallowing, or breathing problems.

Ask whether the tooth is erupted or impacted and whether imaging shows a relationship to a nerve or sinus. Ask what anesthesia is planned, what sensations to expect, how the socket will be managed, and which symptoms need urgent review.
