When do people get wisdom teeth removed

Wisdom teeth are removed when examination shows disease, repeated infection, damage, or a position that creates a clear risk to nearby teeth or tissues.

Third molars may erupt normally, remain partly covered by gum, or become impacted against bone or the second molar. Removal is considered from symptoms, cleaning access, decay, gum disease, cystic change, damage, and the tooth’s relationship to nerves and sinuses.

Have the tooth assessed with an oral examination and appropriate dental imaging rather than deciding from age alone. Keep the area clean and report pain, swelling, bad taste, or difficulty opening the mouth.

Seek dental care for recurrent gum infection, decay, damage to the neighboring molar, persistent pain, swelling, or a lesion around the tooth. A dentist may recommend monitoring when a healthy tooth can be cleaned and checked.

Ask what problem the tooth has caused or may cause, whether monitoring is reasonable, how imaging shows the roots and nearby structures, and which removal method is proposed.
