Clove products may briefly numb toothache, but they do not remove decay, a cracked tooth, gum infection, or another cause of dental pain.

Toothache can arise from inflamed pulp, exposed dentine, an abscess, gum inflammation, or trauma. Clove oil contains eugenol, which can affect sensation and irritate oral tissues when concentrated or repeatedly applied.

If you use a clove product, follow its labelled directions and keep it off the gums and soft tissues; never pack undiluted oil into a cavity. Rinse gently, avoid extreme temperatures, and arrange treatment for the cause rather than relying on topical relief.

Seek prompt care when pain persists, returns after temporary relief, or comes with swelling, fever, a bad taste, or difficulty opening the mouth. Facial swelling or trouble breathing or swallowing needs urgent medical attention.
