Can sensodyne stop toothache
Sensodyne can reduce sensitivity from exposed dentine, but it does not treat decay, pulp inflammation, cracks, or dental infection.
The short answer
Sensodyne may reduce dentine sensitivity, but it cannot reliably stop toothache caused by decay, an inflamed pulp, a crack, or an abscess. It is a desensitising toothpaste, not a treatment that repairs a damaged tooth or removes infection.

How can exposed dentine trigger sensitivity?
Dentine contains microscopic tubules that can transmit movement of fluid toward the pulp when exposed to the mouth. Formulas may use ingredients such as potassium salts or arginine to reduce sensitivity signals or block tubules, while pain from the pulp has a different mechanism.
How should you use toothpaste without worsening sensitivity?
Use a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste without aggressive scrubbing, and follow the product label. Do not use temporary relief to postpone an examination if pain is spontaneous, lingers after temperature changes, hurts on biting, or is accompanied by swelling.
When should ongoing sensitivity be checked by a dentist?
Book prompt dental care for persistent toothache, a visible cavity, a broken tooth, night pain, lingering hot or cold pain, or swelling. Seek emergency care for facial swelling with difficulty breathing or swallowing.
How can your dentist distinguish sensitivity from pulp pain?
Ask whether the pain is sensitivity or pulp inflammation, and whether the tooth needs a filling, protective restoration, root-canal treatment, or another procedure. Ask how the diagnosis was made and which symptoms mean the condition is worsening.
Frequently asked questions
Can Sensodyne help a cavity?
It may lessen sensitivity temporarily, but a cavity still needs examination and appropriate restorative treatment.
How should I use sensitive-teeth toothpaste?
Brush gently with it as directed on the label and avoid forceful brushing around the sensitive area.
