Toothache and clove oil

Clove oil is an essential oil containing eugenol, a compound used in some dental materials because it can reduce pain sensation when it contacts oral tissues. Toothache usually comes from a problem such as exposed dentine, a cavity, a cracked tooth, gum inflammation, or irritation of the pulp inside the tooth.

If you choose to use clove oil while arranging care, place a small amount on a clean cotton bud and touch it to the painful tooth or nearby gum briefly, then remove the cotton. Do not pour oil into the mouth, place it on an open wound for a prolonged time, or apply it to a child’s mouth without professional advice, because concentrated oil can irritate oral tissues and swallowing it can cause problems.

Rinse gently with lukewarm water, keep food away from the painful area, and follow the label directions for any pain medicine you can take. Do not put aspirin directly on the gum or use clove oil as a substitute for removal of decay, a filling, root canal treatment, drainage, or extraction when one of those is needed.

Arrange a dental examination if the pain lasts, returns after clove oil wears off, is triggered by hot or cold drinks, hurts when you bite, or comes with a broken filling, visible hole, or swollen gum. A dentist may examine the tooth, test its response to cold or tapping, check the surrounding tissues, and take an X-ray when the cause is not clear.

Seek urgent dental or medical care for facial swelling, fever, pus, difficulty opening the mouth, or trouble breathing or swallowing. These features can indicate an infection that needs prompt assessment rather than topical pain relief.

Ask which tooth is causing the pain, whether the pulp or gum is involved, and whether an X-ray is needed. Ask whether the treatment is a filling, pulp treatment, drainage, gum care, repair of a crack, or removal of the tooth, and what symptoms should make you return urgently.
