Clove oil contains eugenol, which may temporarily numb irritated tissue, but it does not remove the dental cause of toothache.

Clove oil may briefly dull tooth pain, but it cannot repair decay, seal a crack, or drain an abscess. If used at all, avoid undiluted oil and keep it off the gum, tongue, and other soft tissues.

Eugenol is the active compound associated with clove oil. Numbing does not remove infected pulp or damaged enamel.
What can you do now instead of applying clove oil unsafely?
Rinse gently with warm water, remove trapped food with careful cleaning, and use a pain medicine only as directed on its label and suitable for you. Do not pack the tooth with oil, aspirin, alcohol, or household chemicals.
