Can natural oil treat the cause of tooth pain?
Oil may briefly coat or soothe a painful tooth, but it cannot remove decay, drain an infection, or repair a cracked tooth.
Why might clove oil briefly soothe a painful tooth?
A natural oil such as clove oil is sometimes used for short-lived topical relief because concentrated eugenol can numb or irritate oral tissues. Put undiluted oil on the gum or tooth can cause a chemical burn, and oil does not treat the dental cause of pain.
How can you care for a painful tooth at home?
Rinse gently with warm water, keep the area clean, avoid very hot, cold, sweet, or hard foods, and use an appropriate over-the-counter pain reliever according to its label if you can take it. Do not place aspirin on the gum, pack the tooth with substances, or delay care while trying oils.
When should ongoing tooth pain be checked by a dentist?
Seek prompt dental care for tooth pain that persists, returns, or is associated with swelling, fever, a bad taste, pain on biting, or difficulty opening the mouth. Facial swelling or difficulty swallowing or breathing requires urgent medical attention.
What should you ask about oil and tooth pain?
Ask what is causing the pain, whether the pulp or tissues around the root are involved, and whether an examination needs an X-ray. Ask which temporary pain-control measures fit your medical history while definitive treatment is arranged.
