Clove and olive oil for toothache

Clove oil may briefly dull tooth pain, but olive oil does not treat its cause and persistent pain needs a dental examination.

Clove oil contains eugenol, a compound used in some dental materials for its local numbing and soothing effect. Toothache can instead come from decay, an inflamed pulp, a cracked tooth, a loose filling, or infection around the root, none of which olive oil or clove oil repairs.

Do not put concentrated oil into a cavity or against the gum. Rinse gently with warm water, keep food away from the painful area, and use an over-the-counter pain reliever only as directed on its label and appropriate for you.

Arrange an examination if pain lasts, returns, or is triggered by heat, cold, biting, or sweet foods. Seek urgent care for facial swelling, fever, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or swelling that reaches the eye or neck.

Ask whether decay, a cracked tooth, pulp inflammation, or a gum problem is causing the pain. Ask which treatment will remove the cause, whether a temporary dressing is appropriate, and what symptoms require same-day review.
