Clove oil not working for toothache

Clove oil may briefly numb toothache because eugenol affects nerve signalling, but it cannot remove decay, drain an abscess, or repair a cracked tooth.

Clove oil contains eugenol, a compound with local numbing and antiseptic effects, but toothache often originates in the pulp, periodontal ligament, or tissues around a tooth. Topical oil does not clean infected canals or seal a cavity.

Stop applying concentrated oil if it burns the gums. Rinse the mouth, avoid placing aspirin or chemicals on tissue, use only pain medicine that is suitable for you as directed on its label, and arrange an examination.

Seek urgent care for facial swelling, fever, pus, spreading redness, difficulty opening the mouth, swallowing, or breathing. Severe pain that interrupts sleep also needs prompt assessment.

Could the pain be pulp inflammation, an abscess, a crack, or gum disease? Do I need an X-ray? What treatment will remove the cause, and what can I use safely until the appointment?
