Clove oil and coconut oil for toothache

Clove oil may briefly numb or alter toothache because of eugenol, while coconut oil does not treat the dental cause; pain still needs diagnosis.

Eugenol from clove oil can affect sensory nerve signalling and is used in some dental materials, but concentrated oil can irritate oral tissue. Toothache may arise from decay, pulp inflammation, a crack, gum infection, or an abscess.

Do not pour either oil into a cavity or hold concentrated clove oil against the gum. Rinse gently, keep the area clean, use a cold compress outside the cheek, and take only pain medicine suitable for you according to its label or a clinician’s advice.

Seek prompt care for toothache that persists, wakes you, hurts on biting, or comes with swelling, fever, bad taste, or drainage. Emergency help is needed for spreading swelling or difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Ask whether the pulp, root, gum, and neighbouring teeth have been tested. Ask which treatment removes the cause, such as a filling, root canal, drainage, gum treatment, or extraction.
