Clove leaf oil for toothache

Clove leaf oil is an essential oil distilled from clove leaves and may contain eugenol, a compound used in some dental materials. Toothache usually reflects inflamed pulp, exposed dentine, a damaged filling, gum disease, or tissue around a wisdom tooth.

Do not place undiluted oil on the tooth or gums, swallow it, or use it in a child without professional guidance. Rinse gently with water, clean around the tooth, and use a pain medicine only if its label and your medical history allow it.

Arrange an examination if pain persists, returns, or is triggered by heat, cold, biting, or sweet foods. Seek urgent care for facial swelling, fever, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, or trouble opening the mouth.
