Filling decay
A filling repairs a tooth after decay has removed enough enamel or dentine that the damaged area cannot be managed by cleaning and fluoride alone.
The short answer
Bacteria produce acids from dietary sugars, dissolving enamel and then dentine. The dentist removes the softened infected tooth structure, cleans the cavity, and seals it with a restorative material such as composite resin, amalgam, glass ionomer, or another selected material.
When can an early chalky area be managed without a filling?
A white or chalky area may be managed with plaque control and fluoride when the surface is intact. Once the surface collapses, food and plaque collect in the cavity and a restoration may be needed to restore shape and protect deeper tissues.
