Professional tooth whitening uses peroxide gel to lighten natural enamel, while fillings, crowns and veneers do not change color.

Whitening gel moves through enamel and dentine and breaks down some colored molecules. The final appearance depends on the starting shade, the cause of discoloration, tooth structure and whether restorations are present.

A dentist first checks for decay, leaking fillings, cracks, gum disease and exposed dentine, then selects a clinic procedure or fitted home tray when appropriate. Follow the stated wear time, keep gel off the gums, and use a sensitive-tooth toothpaste if advised.

Arrange an examination before whitening if a tooth is painful, dark after an injury, has a cavity, or has a restoration whose shade must match. Stop and seek advice if burning gum pain, marked sensitivity or uneven color develops.
