Teeth whitening safe for crowns

Whitening gel changes natural tooth colour but does not change the colour of crowns, so a dentist should assess shade matching before treatment.

Crowns are made from materials such as porcelain, ceramic, or resin, while whitening agents act mainly on natural tooth pigments. Existing crowns may therefore remain their present shade while nearby teeth lighten, creating a mismatch.

Have the crown, its age, margins, and the neighbouring teeth examined before whitening. A dentist can check for decay or leaking margins, record the current shade, and discuss whitening natural teeth or replacing a visibly mismatched crown.

Arrange dental care if the crown is painful, loose, cracked, has a rough edge, or traps food. Seek prompt care for facial swelling, fever, or difficulty swallowing, because whitening will not treat an infection.

Ask which crown material you have, whether the tooth underneath is healthy, what shade change is realistic for the natural teeth, and whether whitening before any crown replacement would improve the final match.
