Teeth whitening safe for braces

Whitening during braces depends on the appliance, the bleaching material, and whether the gel can contact every visible tooth surface.

Bleaching gels usually contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Brackets or attachments can block gel from enamel beneath them, so whitening during treatment may leave uneven shades when the appliance is removed; gum contact can also cause irritation and teeth can become sensitive.

Ask the orthodontic or dental team whether whitening should wait until braces or aligners are finished. Use only a product and application method they approve, keep gel off the gums, and stop if burning or marked sensitivity develops.

Arrange care if whitening causes persistent gum soreness, ulceration, significant sensitivity, or a change in the fit of an appliance. Do not continue a product that causes tissue injury.
