Can teeth whitening strips break your teeth

Whitening strips do not normally fracture sound enamel, but peroxide can irritate tissues and existing cracks need assessment.

A strip carries peroxide gel against the enamel. It lightens pigment molecules, while a crack is a structural break caused by stress, decay, trauma, or a weakened restoration, not by bleaching chemistry alone.

Use the product only as labelled, keep gel off the gums, and stop if sharp pain, gum injury, or a new rough edge appears. Do not place strips over a loose filling or a tooth with an untreated cavity.

Seek care for a visible line, a piece that moves, biting pain, lingering cold pain, swelling, or pain confined to one tooth. The dentist may use transillumination, bite testing, radiographs, and a pulp assessment.

Ask whether the tooth has decay, enamel loss, a crack, or a failing restoration before whitening. Ask how existing fillings, crowns, or veneers will affect the colour match.
