Teeth whitening fades gradually as new stains form, but careful cleaning and maintenance can help the lighter shade last longer.

The result depends on the original shade, the type of discoloration, and repeated exposure to staining foods, drinks, or tobacco. Internal discoloration from trauma or changes in dentine may respond differently from surface staining.
