How to clean teeth whitening molds

A whitening mold is usually a clear, flexible dental tray that holds whitening gel against the front surfaces of the teeth. Saliva, gel residue and oral bacteria can remain on the tray after treatment, so cleaning removes residue without distorting the plastic.

After removing the trays, rinse both sides under cool or lukewarm running water. Use a soft toothbrush and a small amount of mild liquid soap, clean the inner gel channels and tooth-shaped surfaces, rinse away all soap, and place the trays open-side up on a clean towel to dry. Do not use hot water, a dishwasher or abrasive toothpaste because heat can change the fit and abrasion can scratch the plastic.

Store completely dry trays in their ventilated case, away from direct heat and sunlight. If the tray has a strong persistent odor, cloudy deposits, cracks, sharp edges or a changed fit after cleaning, stop using it until its condition has been checked.

Arrange a dental check if the tray rubs the gums, causes a persistent sore spot, no longer seats over the teeth, or has a crack or sharp edge. A dental professional can assess the fit and decide whether the tray should be adjusted or replaced.

Seek prompt care for marked gum swelling, facial swelling, severe pain, or trouble breathing or swallowing. These symptoms are not explained by ordinary gel residue on a tray and need an examination.

Ask whether the tray still fits the gingival margins and tooth surfaces, which cleaning product is suitable for its material, and whether any cloudy area is residue or plastic damage. If you use prescription whitening gel, also ask how the tray should be cleaned between applications and when it should be replaced.
