Question and answer

Sodium bicarbonate for teeth whitening

Sodium bicarbonate can polish some surface stains, but it cannot bleach intrinsic colour and repeated abrasive brushing can wear tooth surfaces.

The short answer

Sodium bicarbonate may remove some external stains by mild abrasion, but it does not bleach dentine or safely replace a formulated whitening treatment. Brushing hard or combining it with acids can increase wear on enamel and expose the more yellow dentine beneath.

What is the direct answer?

What does this question mean?

Sodium bicarbonate is a fine alkaline powder that can polish deposits on the enamel surface. Intrinsic colour inside enamel or dentine, tetracycline staining, fluorosis, fillings, crowns, and veneers do not respond to simple polishing in the same way as surface plaque or food stain.

What can you do next?

Use a fluoride toothpaste and a soft brush with gentle pressure, and do not mix bicarbonate with lemon juice or other acids. For a colour change, have a dentist examine the cause of discolouration and discuss a measured peroxide-based option or cleaning when that is appropriate.

When should you seek dental care?

Seek an examination for one dark tooth, new staining, sensitivity, holes, bleeding gums, or rough and transparent edges. These findings can indicate decay, pulp disease, erosion, gum disease, or exposed dentine rather than a cosmetic stain alone.

What should you ask the dentist?

Ask whether the colour is on the surface or within enamel and dentine, and whether cleaning, whitening, or restorative treatment addresses it. Ask how to protect enamel and whether existing fillings or crowns will remain a different shade.

Frequently asked questions

Can baking soda whiten yellow teeth?

It may polish surface stain, but yellow dentine or intrinsic colour needs a dental assessment and may require a different treatment.

Can I use lemon with it?

Avoid acidic mixtures because acid softens mineral surfaces while abrasion removes softened material.
