What is baking soda and why can it feel abrasive?
Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, an alkaline powder with abrasive particles. Brushing with it can disturb some external stain, while true bleaching uses a peroxide gel that changes chromogenic molecules within enamel and dentin.
What might explain different results from baking soda?
The result depends on whether the discoloration is on the surface, inside the tooth, from decay, or in a restoration. Abrasive rubbing can also expose more dentin if enamel is worn, making sensitivity or yellow root surfaces more noticeable.
What should you use for everyday tooth cleaning?
Use a fluoride toothpaste for routine brushing and clean between the teeth. A dentist can check for decay, cracks, gum recession, and existing crowns or fillings before selecting a whitening method and concentration.
When should a dark or painful tooth be assessed?
Seek care for a single dark tooth, pain, sensitivity, cavities, gum irritation, or discoloration that appeared after trauma. Whitening should be postponed until active disease is assessed.
