Whitening cost depends on the method, tooth condition, number of visits, and whether a dentist treats stains or underlying disease first.

Professional whitening uses a peroxide gel to lighten stains within enamel and dentin. It can improve many surface and internal discolorations, but it does not change the colour of fillings, crowns, veneers, or implants.

A dentist first checks for cavities, cracked teeth, gum disease, exposed roots, and restorations, then selects in-office whitening or a custom take-home tray. Ask for the gel strength, tray design, treatment visits, sensitivity plan, and replacement-restoration implications.

Seek an examination before whitening if teeth hurt, gums bleed, a tooth is dark after an injury, or you have untreated decay. Pain during or after whitening that persists should be reported so the cause can be assessed.
