A soft or extra-soft toothbrush with rounded bristles can clean the gum margin while reducing the abrasion caused by forceful brushing.

The bristles should reach the junction where tooth and gum meet without being bent aggressively into the tissue. Gum recession and exposed root surfaces can be worsened by scrubbing, a hard brush, or abrasive toothpaste.

Use light pressure and small movements at the gum line for about two minutes, replacing the brush when bristles splay. Clean between teeth separately, and choose a brush head that lets you reach the back teeth without forcing it.

Arrange an examination for persistent bleeding, recession, ulcers, sensitivity, or swollen gums. Bleeding can reflect plaque-related inflammation, but it can also need assessment when it does not improve with gentle daily cleaning.
