How does Sensodyne affect sensitivity around the gums?
Sensodyne toothpaste contains a desensitising ingredient such as potassium nitrate or an arginine-based system, depending on the formulation. These ingredients act on exposed dentine, where open tubules can transmit cold or touch toward the pulp.
Gum discomfort has different causes from dentine sensitivity. Plaque-induced gingivitis, a gum ulcer, recession, a cracked tooth, or an abscess needs a different assessment and treatment.
How should you brush sensitive areas near the gums?
Use a soft toothbrush and brush gently twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste, allowing the lather to contact sensitive areas. Do not scrub the gum margin or stop cleaning because it bleeds.
