Can a root canal be painful

A root canal should be manageable with local anaesthetic, but the tooth or tissues around its root may be tender before or afterward.

Pain can arise from inflamed pulp, pressure around the root, or a bite that contacts too early. Canal cleaning removes diseased pulp and sealing limits contamination.

Tell the dentist if sharp sensation remains so anaesthesia can be improved. Follow the agreed pain plan and avoid hard chewing until restoration.

Call the treating clinic for swelling, fever, severe pressure, or pain that worsens. Spreading facial swelling or breathing difficulty is an emergency.

Ask what causes the pain, how numbness will be checked, and how the bite and final restoration will be assessed.
