Teeth hurt after dentist

Tender teeth after dental treatment can result from normal tissue irritation, a high bite, exposed dentine, or inflammation that needs review.

Mild tenderness can follow a filling, crown preparation, cleaning, or injection. Pain on biting can reflect a high restoration or an irritated periodontal ligament.

Use a soft toothbrush, avoid extreme temperatures, and contact the treating practice if pain worsens or changes your bite.

Seek care promptly for facial swelling, fever, pus, severe or worsening pain, persistent bleeding, or difficulty breathing or swallowing. A dentist can examine the tissues, identify the cause, and provide treatment such as cleaning, restoration, drainage, or review of an appliance.

Ask what caused the symptom, which examination or imaging is needed, what treatment is appropriate, and which changes require urgent review.
