How do braces and aligners transmit force to teeth?
Brackets and archwires, or clear thermoplastic aligners and attachments, transmit force to selected teeth. Pain may instead come from a sharp wire, loose bracket, poorly seated tray, cheek irritation, decay, or gum inflammation.
What can you do to manage short-term orthodontic soreness?
Follow wear instructions, choose softer foods briefly, and use orthodontic wax over a rubbing bracket or wire if advised. Do not cut wires, alter trays, or take unsuitable medicine.
When should worsening orthodontic pain be reviewed?
Contact the orthodontic team for severe or worsening pain, a loose appliance, a tray that will not seat, swelling, fever, or pain isolated to one tooth. Facial swelling or swallowing difficulty is urgent.
