Do invisalign hurt your gums

The gums are the soft tissues surrounding the necks of the teeth. A clear thermoplastic aligner rests over the teeth and can rub the gingival margin or hold plaque against it when its edge, fit, or cleaning is inadequate.

Remove only the obvious sharp plastic with an aligner file supplied by the treating clinician, clean the tray and teeth, and wear the aligner as directed. Do not keep using a tray that rocks, cracks, or repeatedly cuts the gum; the orthodontist can inspect the fit and smooth or replace it.

Arrange dental or orthodontic care if bleeding, a sore ulcer, swelling, bad taste, or pain persists after the tray is cleaned or removed. Seek urgent care for rapidly increasing facial swelling, fever, difficulty swallowing, or difficulty breathing.

Ask whether the irritation comes from the aligner edge, tooth movement, plaque-related gingivitis, or an unrelated gum condition, and whether the tray needs adjustment, replacement, or a revised wear schedule.
