Causes for gum bleeding when brushing

Bleeding during brushing most often reflects inflamed gum tissue, usually from plaque at the gum margin, but persistent bleeding needs an examination.

Gum bleeding while brushing usually comes from gingivitis caused by plaque irritating the gingival margin; tartar, trauma, medicines, and other conditions can also contribute.

Bleeding is not a reason to stop cleaning. Brush gently with a soft brush, clean between the teeth daily, and arrange an examination if it continues.

A dentist should assess bleeding that persists, is heavy, occurs without brushing, or comes with swelling, loose teeth, fever, or facial swelling.

Ask whether the gums show gingivitis or periodontitis, whether tartar is present below the gumline, and which cleaning method fits your gums and medicines.
