Eugenol clove

Eugenol is the aromatic compound in clove oil used in some dental materials, temporary fillings, and pain-relieving preparations.

Eugenol comes from clove oil and has a characteristic scent and numbing effect. Dentistry uses it in controlled formulations, often with zinc oxide, rather than as a substitute for treating the tooth.

A dentist may place a zinc oxide eugenol temporary restoration or use an eugenol-containing dressing after assessing the tooth. Do not place concentrated clove oil into a cavity or against the gum because contact can irritate oral tissues.

Arrange dental care for toothache, swelling, or a broken filling. Urgent assessment is needed for facial swelling, fever, difficulty swallowing, or difficulty breathing.

Ask which material is being used and why. Tell the dentist about allergies, pregnancy, medicines, and any burning or rash after a clove product.
