Zirconia is a polycrystalline ceramic based on zirconium oxide. The dentist chooses between them using tooth position, available space, bite forces, shade, and remaining tooth structure.

Lithium disilicate can transmit and reflect light in a tooth-like way, making it useful where appearance is central. Zirconia can provide high fracture resistance, especially in a well-designed monolithic crown, but its appearance varies with formulation and finishing.

The laboratory designs either crown digitally or from an impression, then the dentist checks the fit, contacts, bite, colour, and gum margin before bonding or cementing it.

For a front tooth with adequate space and moderate bite load, lithium disilicate may be selected for optical results. For a molar, heavy clenching, or limited restorative space, zirconia may be considered.

Do not choose only by the material name. A mouth scan or impression, photographs, bite assessment, and tooth preparation determine whether the selected crown will fit and function.
