How to clean a retainer with denture cleaner

A removable retainer may be cleaned with a product labelled for its material, using cool water and gentle brushing rather than heat.

Retainers can be clear thermoplastic sheets, acrylic with wire, or another appliance material. Denture cleansers are formulated for removable oral appliances, but a formula, soaking time, or additive that suits acrylic may not suit every plastic or metal component.

Rinse the retainer, place it in a clean container with cool or lukewarm water, and follow the cleanser label for the specific appliance. Rinse it thoroughly afterward and use a soft brush without abrasive toothpaste.

Ask for an appliance review if the retainer becomes cloudy, cracked, warped, rough, foul-smelling after cleaning, or no longer fits. Do not wear a distorted retainer that presses one tooth or prevents a normal bite.

Show the retainer and cleanser and ask whether the ingredients and soaking instructions match its material. Ask how often it should be cleaned and whether damage or wear means it needs repair or replacement.
