Braces use brackets, archwires, and controlled force to move teeth and correct selected bite problems over time.

Fixed braces attach brackets to the tooth surfaces with dental adhesive, and an archwire runs through them. Elastic modules, springs, or auxiliary elastics can add specific forces, while bone around the roots remodels as teeth move.

An orthodontic assessment includes photographs, measurements, bite records, and often radiographs before a plan is chosen. During treatment, brush around every bracket, clean under the wire, attend adjustments, and wear any prescribed elastics.

Seek care if a bracket detaches, a wire cuts the cheek, facial swelling develops, or pain is severe or unusual. A loose appliance should be reported before the next scheduled visit.

Ask which tooth movements and bite changes are planned, which appliance type is appropriate, and how retention will work afterward. Ask what foods and cleaning tools are recommended.
