How to avoid bleeding gums

Bleeding gums usually improve when plaque is removed gently every day, but persistent bleeding needs an examination for gum disease or another cause.

Gingivitis makes gum tissue swollen and more likely to bleed when touched. Calculus, inadequate cleaning, smoking, hormonal changes, some medicines, and illnesses can also contribute.

Use a soft toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste twice daily and clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental brush. Do not stop cleaning because a small amount of bleeding occurs, but use light pressure and arrange an examination if it continues.

Book dental care if bleeding continues after consistent gentle cleaning, or if the gums are swollen, tender, receding, or producing pus. Urgent care is appropriate for heavy bleeding, facial swelling, fever, or difficulty swallowing.
