Safe effective whitening

The most predictable whitening approach is chosen after checking enamel, dentine, gums, existing restorations, and the source of staining.

Sensitivity and gum irritation depend on gel concentration, contact, duration, tray fit, and individual susceptibility. Whitening does not change most restorations.

Have an examination first, follow product directions, keep gel off gums, and stop if significant irritation develops. Ask whether trays or in-office treatment suit the stain.

Seek care for severe sensitivity, chemical irritation, pain, uneven darkening, or a single dark tooth. Do not whiten over untreated decay.

Ask what caused the colour, whether restorations will match, and what concentration, fit, and schedule are appropriate.
