What causes upper gum swelling

Upper gum swelling may result from gingivitis, periodontal infection, trapped food, trauma, or infection from a tooth.

The upper gingiva covers bone around upper teeth; a tender bump can come from inflammation near the gum or a deeper abscess.

Clean gently, rinse after meals, and do not squeeze the area; examination may include probing, tooth tests, and an X-ray.

Seek prompt care for fever, pus, spreading lip or cheek swelling, severe pain, or breathing or swallowing difficulty.

Ask whether the swelling starts in the gum or tooth.
