How to stop an extracted tooth from bleeding

After an extraction, steady pressure on folded gauze helps a clot form and usually controls ordinary oozing.

Extraction bleeding is blood or pink saliva escaping from the socket where the tooth was removed.

The socket needs a stable blood clot to begin healing; vigorous rinsing, spitting, smoking, or disturbing the area can dislodge it.

Place clean folded gauze over the socket and bite with firm, continuous pressure while sitting upright. Follow the written instructions from the extracting dentist.

Contact the dental clinic promptly if bleeding remains heavy despite sustained pressure, the gauze repeatedly becomes soaked, or you feel faint.
