Do root canals hurt bad
A root canal is performed with local anaesthetic, and soreness afterward can occur while the tissues around the treated root settle.
The short answer
Root canal treatment removes inflamed or infected pulp from the canals inside a tooth, cleans and shapes those canals, then seals them. Local anaesthetic numbs the tooth and surrounding tissues; discomfort can still arise from inflammation around the root or from keeping the mouth open.
What happens during each stage of a root canal?
The dentist isolates the tooth with a rubber dam, makes an access opening, removes pulp, irrigates and shapes the canals, places a temporary or permanent seal, and later restores the tooth. Follow instructions about chewing and pain relief after treatment.
What should you do if pain worsens after treatment?
Contact the dental team for worsening pain, swelling, fever, a high bite, or difficulty swallowing or breathing. A tooth that remains painful may need evaluation for missed anatomy, a crack, reinfection, or another source.
When should you discuss root canal comfort and planning?
Ask how many visits are expected, how the tooth will be numbed, whether the bite will be adjusted, and what final restoration will protect the remaining tooth structure.
