One part of gum is swollen

A single swollen gum area may result from trapped food, gingivitis, a periodontal pocket, trauma, or infection from a nearby tooth.

The swelling may be in the gum beside a tooth, over a partially erupted wisdom tooth, or around a small abscess. The cause is identified by examining the tissue, probing the gum, checking the tooth, and taking an X-ray when indicated.

Gently brush and clean between the teeth, rinse with warm water, and avoid squeezing, piercing, or applying irritants to the lump. Arrange an examination even if it becomes smaller, because drainage can reduce swelling without removing its cause.

Seek dental care soon for a lump that persists, recurs, bleeds, hurts, or drains pus. Urgent care is needed with fever, facial swelling, or difficulty swallowing or breathing.

Ask whether the swelling is in the gum or comes from the tooth, whether there is a periodontal pocket or abscess, and what examination or imaging is needed.
